Animal Ethics and Welfare Policy

The Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Veterinary Medicine Sciences (QJVMS) is committed to promoting the ethical and humane use of animals in scientific research. Manuscripts describing studies involving live animals will be considered for publication only when the research has been conducted in accordance with internationally accepted animal welfare principles and applicable national regulations.

Ethical Approval

All studies involving vertebrate animals or other regulated animal species must receive prior approval from an appropriate Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Animal Ethics Committee, or an equivalent institutional authority before the research begins. Authors must identify the approving committee, institution, approval number (where available), and approval date in the Materials and Methods section.If ethical approval was not required under local regulations, authors must clearly explain the reason in the manuscript.

Animal Welfare

Authors must describe the procedures used to safeguard animal welfare throughout the study. The manuscript should explain the measures taken to minimize pain, distress, discomfort, and unnecessary suffering, including the appropriate use of anesthesia, analgesia, sedation, humane endpoints, and euthanasia methods when applicable.

Research involving animals must be scientifically justified, designed to minimize the number of animals used, and conducted according to the principles of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (the 3Rs).

Reporting Standards

Authors are encouraged to prepare manuscripts in accordance with the ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines for studies involving live animals to ensure complete, transparent, and reproducible reporting.

Editorial Assessment

The editorial office may request copies of ethical approval documents or additional information regarding animal welfare practices at any stage of the review process. Failure to provide satisfactory evidence of ethical compliance may result in rejection of the manuscript or withdrawal of a published article if ethical concerns are identified after publication.

Author Declaration

Authors must include an Animal Ethics Statement within the manuscript confirming that:

  • ethical approval was obtained before commencing the study;
  • all applicable institutional and national regulations governing animal research were followed; and
  • every reasonable effort was made to ensure animal welfare and minimize pain or distress throughout the investigation.
